Treating burns

Every year there are a large number of people who suffer from a minor burn or scald injury.
How to identify a burn:
• Pain at the site of the injury
• Redness, tenderness and swelling
• Possible blistering
How to treat a burn:
• Try to remove the source of the burn if possible
• Put on disposable gloves if you have them
• Flush the area of the wound with water for a minimum of 10 minutes
• In case of swelling try to remove any restrictive clothing or jewellery
• Do not remove anything that is stuck to the burnt skin
• Do not use any creams or lotions on the burnt area
• Do not burst any blisters
• Do not use any adhesive dressings
• Seek medical attention particularly if the burn is on a young child. Also if the burn is over a large surface area, or has burnt through the two upper layers of skin.
