Involving Learners

By Bill, posted

It is important that learners are involved from the outset, and given clear instructions on any work that needs to be completed. Teachers need to avoid the worst case scenario where learners may not understand a set question, or not know what is expected from them in an exam.

Exams

Teachers can help their students in forthcoming exams by outlining the criteria that will arise. Knowing the style and typical question content can help students plan and practice a particular writing style or skill set. The old saying goes that if you “fail to prepare, then prepare to fail”.

Coursework

Coursework can typically take several months to complete and can be quite a stressful process. Teachers can make this process easier by ensuring a proper introduction has been given. They need to ensure that each learner has grasped what is expected of them and that no one is doubtful of their ability to complete the work. Regular checks through the term can ensure that candidates are on track.

Teachers can make their own lives easier by consulting with a colleague when setting a given question to a student in the form of coursework or other types of assessment. Seeking an outside perspective is always beneficial, and in this case could stop students from digressing from their specialist topic.
