Safe and Supportive Learning Environment

By Bill, posted

Teachers can enhance their lessons / courses by creating a safe and supportive learning environment. This can be achieved through the initial assessment process, confidentiality within the classroom, Health & Safety and by being approachable.

Initial Assessments

The initial assessment process can help identify any specific needs of the group. These types of assessments are important as learners could be anxious about their specific requirements and may fear that they are not met. Putting these fears to one side can help the learner focus on the lesson, with all the resources that they need at their disposal.

Confidentiality

Learners will engage and prosper within the classroom when they feel that they can relax and express themselves. It is therefore important that what happens in the classroom remains confidential and is not disclosed. This applies to group discussions, written assignments and coursework which the learner will have completed in trust of the teacher.

The only time this would not apply would be if a ‘safeguarding’ issue arose and the teacher would have a duty to report to their safeguarding officer who may have to share the information with external agencies.

Health & Safety

Maintaining high standards within Health & Safety is a must within any classroom. Learners will work better when they feel safe which could lead to better levels of concentration. Inadequate facilities may make people feel uneasy and hamper the learning process.

Approachable

Teachers can make themselves approachable in order to give their students the best possible support. This is achieved through one-on-one chats, replying to emails and answering telephone calls from concerned students. Learners may become alienated if they feel that their teacher is not available to support them.
