How to Become a First Aid Trainer

By Bill, posted
The world of freelance training can open up opportunities in both the public and private sectors - allowing you to be your own boss and choosing where and when you want to work. First Aid training is particularly rewarding as you have the opportunity to teach skills that are used globally to save lives.
Becoming a first aid trainer is not as tricky as you might imagine. With some relevant experience, dedication and enthusiasm, it’s is actually quite simple to kick start a new career.

Teaching Qualification

First and foremost if you want to be a trainer you will need to have an entry level teaching qualification. The Level 3 Award in Education and Training qualification is a 3 day classroom course which will explain the roles and responsibilities of teaching, how to create effective lessons and the different ways to assess learners.
The course is nationally accredited and by its conclusion will allow the successful candidate to teach any subject they have experience in.

First Aid Qualification

Ok so you now have a teaching qualification that proves your competence as a trainer. Whats next is to match it up with some relevant experience. The easiest way to do this is to obtain the Level 3 First Aid at Work qualification.
Holding this qualification will allow you to teach the following courses:
  • Basic Life Support Training
  • Emergency First Aid at Work
  • First Aid at Work Refresher (2 Day)
  • First Aid at Work (3 Day)
Its best to also complete the 12 Hour Paediatric First Aid Course if you want to specialise in this field eg a trainer within a school.

Insurance

Trainers should take out public liability insurance in case a member of the public blames you for causing damage or injury. Alongside professional indemnity insurance in case a member of the public / client accuses you of making a mistake within your work. Both are relatively cost effective and can be set up for roughly £10 per month.

Equipment

Now you have everything you need to run your own courses apart from the basic equipment. Use the below checklist to make sure you have everything you need:
  • Mannequins (minimum of x3 adult) or x2 child & x2 infant for Paediatric courses
  • AED training unit
  • Bandages / wound dressings
  • Mannequin wipes
  • Projector for Powerpoint presentations

Recap

Just to recap you will need the following to become a First Aid trainer
  1. Level 3 teaching qualification
  2. First Aid at Work qualification (or professional exemption)
  3. Insurance
  4. Equipment

Helpful Hint - It can prove beneficial to have your own transport as courses can be in various locations across the country
