CAVA Career Pathways

By Dom Hayward, posted
The demand for vocational assessors has grown exponentially over the past decade.

With more and more organisations putting safety and standards at the forefront of
everything they do, the need for qualified assessors is likely to continue to grow.
If you are thinking of a role in assessing, or already have the CAVA qualification and are
wondering what opportunities now lie open to you: please read on for some of the most
common career paths we see from candidates upon completion of this course.

Firstly, what is an assessor’s role?

Assessors play a vital role across many industries; it is their job to evaluate learners’ skills,
knowledge and competence in a vocational (work-based) setting.

Assessors will assess candidates’ learning or performance in line with a pre-defined criterion
set by an organisation, or against national standards set by awarding bodies for example
City and Guilds, Highfield and Pearson.

Assessors are most commonly used within industries where quality control and safety are of
utmost importance.

Freelance Assessor

Many successful candidates will decide to go on to work for themselves as a freelance
assessor; this flexible approach allows you to undertake assessments for multiple companies
within your field of expertise.

Having experience across various sectors may open further doors to assessing candidates
within different industries.

The Rail Industry

The Rail industry has strict competency standards for safety-critical roles such as train
drivers, signallers, customer service staff and engineers.

All of these roles require ongoing assessment of skills and competence, these need to be
completed by qualified assessors.

In industries such as railways and aviation, having qualified assessors isn’t only useful to
ensure day to day tasks are being undertaken to a certain standard, but they also have a
vital role in keeping passengers and staff safe.

Dental Nurse

If you are already a dental nurse or considering a career in dental nursing, obtaining the
CAVA qualification is a great way to broaden your career prospects.

Dentistry is a sector in which apprentices commonly require assessment while completing
their dental diploma qualifications.

Barbering or Beauty Academy

Beauty and Barbering academies must have at least one qualified assessor. Therefore, the
qualification would allow you to work for an existing academy, training provider or college.

If you also obtain the Level 3 Award in Teaching and Education alongside the Level 4 Award
Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) qualification, you can set up your own academy and issue
nationally recognised certificates accredited by an awarding body, for example City and
Guilds.

Become an IQA

Upon completion of an assessing qualification, many learners will then go on to complete
the Level 4 Award in Internal Quality Assurance (IQA). The role of an IQA is to assure the
quality of assessments within an organisation.
