QTLS Course

The main pathway to QTLS, if you want to avoid university, is through obtaining the Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (DiT). This course will prove to be your golden ticket to applying for QTLS with the Society for Education and Training (SET).

What is the Level 5 DiT?

The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training is a QTLS course that requires the learner to log 150 hours of their current teaching role. During this period, an internal mentor at your organisation will conduct 10 hours of observations, staggered throughout the course. 

Alongside the teaching hours, expect to write three written assignments, A project, a reflective learning journal and a professional discussion with your mentor at Train Aid.

Entry Requirements

The main entry requirement for QTLS is to hold the level 5 Diploma in Teaching or a PGCE obtained via university. Alongside this qualification, learners will also need to upload their Level 2 English and Maths certificates to the portal.

What if I don't have them?

Unfortunately, this is a strict requirement, and it is neither possible to gain certification on the Level 5 DiT nor gain QTLS without these qualifications. Many of our learners have experienced problems dealing with their schools, which may even have closed down since completing their GCSEs/O levels.

Train Aid offers both Functional Skills in English (Level 2) and Functional Skills Qualification in Mathematics (Level 2) to help any learners who cannot obtain their old certificates. Both of these qualifications have 55 guided learner hours, can be completed via distance learning, and are assessed by an invigilated online exam at the end of the process.

Don’t forget that a QTLS course is not possible without first signing up with SET. You will need to select the member (MSET), which is the standard tier for QTLS applicants. Expect to pay £93 per year for membership by direct debit, or £7.75 per month, and there is also a credit/debit card option for £99.50 per year.

Always make sure your membership is open/active before the formation window opens. Otherwise, this could delay you uploading your evidence, and you could miss registration by a whole year.

Subject Specialism

As part of the QTLS course process, you will also need to upload your Level 3 qualification in your subject specialism. The general rule of thumb within Further Education (FE) teaching is the one above principle. Meaning the teacher should always hold a higher level than their students when teaching a subject area.

Examples include a mathematics teacher holding at least an A level in mathematics when teaching GCSE students, or a heating (plumbing) engineer teacher holding an NVQ level 3 when teaching Level 2 students in an FE college.

  1. Uploaded Level 5 Diploma in Teaching (DiT) qualification
  2. Uploaded Level 2 English and Maths qualifications 
  3. Signed up for Society for Education and Training (SET) membership
  4. Uploaded Level 3 qualification in your chosen subject specialism 

Next Steps

It’s important to remember that you will generally have two formation windows throughout the year: October and January. You will unfortunately have to wait for the next cohort if you miss one of these windows. From here, the QTLS course can generally be broken down into three distinctive phases:

Phase 1

Confirm your employment and teaching hours. It has to be an appropriate post-14 (age group) teaching role. Classes should have a minimum of 5 students, and you should teach 4-11 hours per week. Over the 6-month formation period, this equates to 230 hours.

During phase 1, you will also need to assign a mentor at your organisation who will complete observations, hold meetings and conduct a professional discussion with you.

Phase 2

Phase 2 will require you to build an evidence workbook and upload this evidence to your online portfolio.

Phase 3 

Here, your mentor reviews your workbook, and you upload it before the deadline (roughly 3 months after the window opens). The QTLS course process is a pass/fail. Results will be released 6 weeks after the deadline, and if successful, the applicant is added to the official central register of qualified teachers.
