Level 3 Award in Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Education (RQF)

We all need to learn more about the capacities and impact of AI; it’s something that we can’t shy away from.  Some find the whole concept terrifying and that’s understandable as it can feel much bigger than anything we can comprehend.  However, it is most certainly here to stay – not just in education but in every area of life - and can actually have an incredibly positive impact on teachers and learners.
At Train Aid, we felt that teachers needed some support with AI and so we are in the process of developing a course: ‘AI in Education’, coming soon, it has Focus Awards as the awarding body and is an online, distance course with four units.  It enables you as the teacher to reflect on the current use of AI in your setting, investigate possibilities and plan for the future, which can only be a good thing!

 The four units are:

1.       Foundations of AI in Education
2.       Practical Applications of AI in Education
3.       The Future of AI in Education
4.       AI Use Malpractice in Education

These units cover 89 Guided Learning Hours and consist of a mix of research, watching video tutorials and planning.

Unit 1 is an opportunity to understand the basics of AI and look at its use in education across the board in different settings.  It will be a research task and result in a written assignment, enabling you to understand AI ethics, look at current technologies used and consider strengths and limitations of these varied approaches.  There will be online slide presentations and video tutorials to assist you with the writing of this assignment.

Unit 2 explores AI in practice within teaching and learning.  It will ask you to reflect on what you currently do; what colleagues do and what you can develop further after some research.  You will look at current AI platforms and adaptive programs and evaluate benefits to the teacher and learner – you will also look at the challenges involved.  You will create a scheme of work and lesson plans that involve the use of AI for personalised learning and feedback.  You will also look at the use of AI for administrative tasks and consider the impact on your role.  The Unit will take the form of a collection of practical tasks to submit as evidence and there will be a checklist to work through.  As with Unit 1, there will be online slide presentations and video tutorials to assist you and to get you thinking.

Unit 3 looks at how you are going to use AI going forward after you have this grounding from the first two units of good knowledge and research along with practical application.  You will look at emerging trends of AI in education and then develop an action plan for use in your setting, considering ethics and professional development needs for staff amongst other elements.

Finally, you will come to Unit 4, which focuses on malpractice.  After working through the slides and videos and carrying out some research, you will write an up to the minute AI policy for your setting.  This will include examples of malpractice and guidance of how to spot it.

Hopefully, by the end of the course, you will feel as if you have a good grasp of the current situation with AI in education and you have your eye on the future.  You will have planned for the next key period of time and will know about emerging trends.  You will be able to advise colleagues about AI approaches and its best uses.  Keep an eye out for the course launch!
