Benedict’s Law - named in memory of Benedict Blythe, a 5-year-old boy who tragically died from anaphylaxis at school in 2021 - has now come into effect across England.
This legislation has been made into law to greatly improve the safety of young people with allergies in schools. As part of these new requirements, schools are now required to ensure all staff receive annual allergy awareness and emergency response training, including how to recognise the signs and symptoms of anaphylaxis and respond appropriately.
While meeting these new requirements is important; this training is about more than just a box ticking exercise; anaphylaxis can happen anywhere and unexpectedly. Therefore, it is vital that everyone onsite has the confidence and knowledge to react quickly.
The Solution
The legislation isn’t just for teachers and designated first aiders, it requires all staff working within a school to undertake allergy awareness training.
With this in mind, we have developed two formats to provide all participants with the information and tools they need to be able to spot the signs of anaphylaxis and know how to act without hesitation. Our anaphylaxis lecture formats can be tailored to a school’s requirements; we are able to accommodate up to 100 staff in one sitting and ensure all participants have an opportunity to practice using a trainer EpiPen; this hands-on experience could well be invaluable should an anaphylaxis reaction occur.
Alternatively, our online courses which staff members can complete in their own time provide a convenient and interactive option that ensures participants obtain the key skills and knowledge required to treat anaphylaxis.
The Result
Over the past 3 months we have trained more than 400 members of staff across multiple schools and colleges, helping them develop the knowledge and confidence to recognise and respond to anaphylaxis. Training such as this ensures that those pupils with allergies will now receive the best possible care and importantly be much safer at school.
