E-Learning

Both Oliver McGowan tiers start with a mandatory 90-minute e-learning module. You can’t progress to the Tier 1 webinar or Tier 2 classroom day without first completing the e-learning module. The following topics and more will be covered in the module:
  • Oliver’s story - Oliver’s death exposes gaps in care. How can we learn from it? And prevent the same mistake from happening again.
  • Health inequalities - Comparison to the general public in areas such as life expectancy, mental health and general well-being 
  • Communication skills - Real example of the problems those living with autism and learning disabilities suffer when communicating with health care workers. Includes how to interpret non-verbal cues and adjust the way we speak. 
  • Reasonable adjustments - How can we adjust the workplace and our methods to make them more accessible for those with learning disabilities or autism?

Tier 1 Content

As mentioned previously, tier 1 training is only one hour; therefore, a lot is packed into a short space of time. Expect to learn the following topics and more:
  • Self-reflection - Looks at one's own perceptions of those living with a learning disability or autism.  This can sometimes include a true-or-false quiz, which adds a fun element to the training but can also highlight common misconceptions.
  • Reasonable adjustments - Lived-experience examples from both co-trainers. Learners are expected to think about what adjustment they could make in everyday life in order to help someone living with autism or a learning disability.
  • Social misconceptions - co-trainers will share common misconceptions they face and unpack myths surrounding people living with a learning disability or autism.
  • Communicate in an accessible way: how to listen correctly, adjust your own language, allow extra processing time and how to detect/understand non-verbal cues. 
  • Question and Answer - Q&A between the co-trainers and learners on the course. This is a great way for learners to ask the co-trainers any questions that may or may not have been covered in the webinar.
Please note: To comply with the official NHS England framework, webinar attendance is strictly capped at a maximum of 30 learners.

Tier 1 is generally for staff members who have indirect contact with people living with autism or a learning disability. It aims to raise awareness of these individuals so staff can help if a situation arises. 

Staff members must complete the 90-minute e-learning module before booking a one-hour webinar session. A facilitator will host the webinar, with a co-trainer with lived experience of autism and a co-trainer with lived experience of a learning disability present.

Tier 2 Content

Remember, Tier 2 is a one-day classroom session, which takes approximately seven hours to complete (including breaks). The course may include similar themes as mentioned above, but you can expect to cover the following topics in detail:
  • Co-Occuring health conditions - What conditions typically co-occur with autism and learning
  • What the law says - Includes the Human Rights Act, Mental Capacity Act (2005) and Equality Act (2010)
  • STOMP & STAMP - Explore what these acronyms mean concerning the over-medication of neurodivergent people.
  • Understanding the Learning Disability and Autistic People (LeDeR) programme.
  • Practical adjustments for stressful environments - This can include settings such as hospitals and clinics. Learn about control measures to put in place, such as double appointments and sensory stress adjustments. 
  • Restraint Reduction - Focus on behavioural support and how we can avoid the need for physical or chemical restraint. 
Please note: Due to strict delivery guidelines set by NHS England to protect our co-delivery teams, we cannot permit more than 30 attendees per classroom.

Tier 2 is for staff members who have direct contact with those living with autism and/or a learning disability. This includes direct care, treatment and support for these individuals in settings such as hospitals, clinics, surgeries and care homes. 

Staff members must complete the 90-minute e-learning module before booking a one-day, classroom-based session in the workplace. A facilitator will oversee the day. A co-trainer with autism will lead the morning, and a co-trainer with a learning disability will lead the afternoon.
